Every once in a while, I’ll be talking to friends about websites and will mention something about SEO. In return, I get several blank stares. Although SEO is a well-known acronym in the marketing world, it is still a mystery to many outside of the field.
So, What is SEO?
SEO, or search engine optimization, is the process of improving your website’s organic search rank through the use of keywords in content and coding and increasing the number of links that direct traffic to your website.
What Does That Really Mean?
By improving your SEO, you may be able to improve where your website shows up in search results when a potential customer is looking for a product or service you sell. It could mean the difference between showing up on the fourth page of results, or showing up within the first several links.
The impact SEO can have is quite substantial. The first step to getting customers through your website is getting them to know it exists. Your website is much more visible when it has a high organic search rating… which is why it is important to care about SEO.
How Do I Improve My SEO?
Too often, people try to improve their SEO with ‘keyword stuffing’ (peppering their site liberally with words or phrases they believe are used to search for their product). Unfortunately, this leaves readers stumbling over copy that is clearly written for robots, not humans. Furthermore, search engines have come a long way and can distinguish between natural writing and keyword stuffing, and could actually penalize your results for the latter.
Another way to improve SEO is to make sure your website assets contain the proper titles and tags, which may require some coding experience.
Your best course of action is to work with a professional who can demonstrate the impact their work is making on your results. Keep in mind that in general, it can take about 4–6 months for noticeable SEO results. However, if you’ve been working with a company for that length of time and are still not seeing a difference, you may want to re-think your SEO strategy.
NOTE: If you are contacted by anyone who tells you that they can quickly get your website to rank at the top of search results, they are mistaken.
